You can use your own cataloguing module to access Te Puna/WorldCat bibliographic utilities via a z39.50 connection

Many libraries are now choosing this option and finding it a great time saver. If you’d like to find out about this the best thing to begin with is to get in touch with Ruth.miller@natlib.govt.nz or Ann.barrie@natlib.govt.nz who will be able to send you the documentation to get started.

You will need to decide how you will add your library’s holdings to the National Union Catalogue. Osmosis is one option; another is sending monthly files of records or ISBNs to Te Puna.

You can find a bibliographic record on WorldCat even if your first attempt fails

April 7, 2009 · Leave a Comment

What sometimes happens is that search is initially done on Te Puna using an ISBN number plus the ‘keyword anywhere’ option.

If you didn’t find it in Te Puna, then immediately pressed “Redo the search on OCLC WorldCat”, the search will have failed (timeout) because there is simply too much data for the search to work through. If you change your search option to an ISBN one to match the data then you will have a much better chance of success.

You can find out about the OCLC Registry

March 20, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Known as the WorldCat Registry, it is a Web-based directory of libraries and library consortia. You can create and manage your institutional profile, including information about its physical facilities, operations, services and people on a secure web platform. Organizations can then quickly access this information.

Upcoming RSS capabilities will allow people and organizations monitoring your profile to be alerted to changes via RSS-enabled websites, web browsers and newsreaders.
